Los Angeles-area, CA, October 3, 2015 — Structural Focus accepted the 2015 Preservation Design Award for the Olan G. and Aida T. Hafley House project from the California Preservation Foundation (CPF). The restoration of the historic Hafley House, originally designed in 1953 by renowned mid-century modern architect Richard J. Neutra, was completed in 2012.

Kelly Sutherlin McLeod Architecture, contractor Mannigan Design, conservation consultant Griswold Conservation Associates, and Structural Focus collaborated in the historic preservation of the Olan G. and Aida T. Hafley House. Original construction documents, correspondence, and field notes from Neutra were used to restore this beautiful mid-century modern landmark. Neutra structures are visibly simple buildings and require a very surgical approach to structural strengthening. Structural Focus was able to achieve the project’s goal of structural integrity by “invisible” methods; the updated structural work is hidden and the house will perform better during the next earthquake.
