Santa Monica Proper Hotel

Santa Monica, CA

Howard Laks Architects and Structural Focus designed the rehabilitation and conversion of the Santa Monica Professional Building, a City landmark, into a four-star hotel in Santa Monica. The 1928 seven-story Spanish Colonial Revival office building was designed by Arthur E. Harvey and it was designated a local landmark in 2005. Although the building was in excellent condition, it was seismically strengthened and renovated to accommodate its new use. Structural improvements included new shotcrete shear walls, the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthening and a concrete moment-resisting frame on the ground floor. The new commercial mixed-use development will house 55 hotel rooms in the 34,196 SF historic concrete building and will add 285 rooms in the ground-up addition.
