Rancho Los Alamitos Foundation initiated the design of a comprehensive master plan for the site that included the relocation and renovation of several existing wood-framed barn structures, an addition to one barn structure to accommodate a small theater and an educational facility as well as other changes worked on by Structural Focus. Several existing historic buildings were part of the restoration project, including a Stallion Barn, a Feed Barn, a Dairy Barn, and a Blacksmith Shop. The new conventional concrete foundations were constructed based on the revised site plan, and each building was moved to its new location. The California Historical Building Code was applied to the modifications of existing structures, and the new foundations were designed to the provisions of the 2001 California Building Code. Once the Rancho Los Alamitos Historical Education Center became fully operational, all of the strengthened barn buildings started to support actual livestock, providing the community a model of the historic rancho life that once dominated our local history.
